At a glance

The scale behind the garden.

For writers, planners and garden-minded readers, this page brings together the latest public figures from U.S. agriculture and Massachusetts state sources. Each number links directly to the organization that published it, with its release date noted below.

These figures describe commercial production and sales, not the work or sales of Melander Taylor Composes.

Methodology & sources

A clear line back to the original data.

I use the latest publicly available releases from the organizations named on each statistic. The 2025 floriculture figures come from the USDA’s annual Commercial Floriculture Survey, which covers operations with at least $10,000 in annual sales of included crops. The 2024 horticultural figures come from the USDA’s Census of Horticultural Specialties. The Massachusetts figure is the state’s published overview of its nursery and flower-growing sector.

Figures are not adjusted or combined across sources. Where the USDA distinguishes between survey and census years, that source year is shown with the statistic. This page is reviewed monthly, or sooner when a key source releases updated figures.
